Sudan’s military says it seized control of the nation’s capital city from paramilitary

Khartoum: The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have announced the successful recapture of Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a significant turning point in the nation’s ongoing civil conflict.
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the military’s chief, proclaimed the liberation of the capital, stating, “Khartoum is now free. It’s over. Khartoum is free.”
In recent operations, the SAF regained control of strategic locations, including the presidential palace and Khartoum International Airport. These victories were achieved after intense battles that had devastated large areas of the city.
Despite this advancement, the RSF continues to hold territories in other regions, particularly in western Sudan’s Darfur area. They have expressed intentions to establish a parallel government and persist in their resistance. This development suggests that while the SAF’s control over Khartoum is a notable achievement, the broader conflict is poised to continue, potentially along an east-west divide within the country.
The civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in over 150,000 fatalities and displaced millions. The humanitarian crisis remains severe, with widespread famine affecting vast segments of the population.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive resolution to address both the political and humanitarian challenges facing Sudan.
