RIO DE JANEIRO — Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to building a fairer and more inclusive global order during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Brazil, emphasizing the need for reforms in international finance, peace and security, and the United Nations system.
Representing Nigeria, Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar declared that Nigeria’s participation in the BRICS bloc, as a newly admitted partner country, aligns with its broader vision for multilateral cooperation and equitable development.
“Nigeria is here to promote shared prosperity and a reformed global governance structure that truly reflects today’s realities,” Tuggar stated.
Since joining BRICS in January 2025, Nigeria has actively pursued strategic partnerships focused on infrastructure development, trade, energy security, climate change, and technological innovation.
During the summit, BRICS members—including Nigeria, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—collectively voiced opposition to rising protectionist policies and advocated for a strengthened multilateral trading system. The bloc also explored increasing the use of local currencies in cross-border transactions, though plans for a unified BRICS currency were deferred.
Nigeria’s growing engagement within BRICS signals a shift in its global diplomacy, positioning the country as a key voice in shaping a multipolar world order that prioritizes inclusivity, cooperation, and sustainable growth.
