Flying Eagles Soar to U-20 World Cup After Penalty Thriller Against Senegal

By iNewsAfrica Sports Desk | May 12, 2025
Nigeria’s U-20 national football team, the Flying Eagles, have officially booked their ticket to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, following a tense 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Senegal in the quarter-finals of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations held Monday night in Ismailia, Egypt.
In a match brimming with nerves and national pride, both teams failed to break the deadlock over 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, forcing a penalty showdown at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium. Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged as the hero of the night, pulling off two crucial saves—one during regulation time and two in the shootout—to seal the win.
The Flying Eagles’ win not only sends them into the semi-finals but also ensures Nigeria’s presence at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, making them the first African nation to qualify for the global tournament. The victory also served as redemption, as the Eagles avenged their earlier 1-0 group stage defeat to Senegal in the same tournament.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu lauded his squad for their focus and execution:
“We trained for this exact moment. Every possible scenario—including penalties—was rehearsed. The boys stuck to the plan, and that’s the mark of champions,” he said post-match.
The Flying Eagles will now turn their attention to a semi-final clash against the winner of the South Africa vs. DR Congo match, with their eyes firmly set on lifting a record-extending eighth U-20 AFCON title.
