Kenyan police officer missing in Haiti amid escalating gang violence

A Kenyan police officer deployed in Haiti as part of the U.N.-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission has been reported missing following an attack by violent gangs. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, during a rescue operation aimed at assisting Haitian police officers trapped in a ditch, suspected to have been deliberately dug by gangs.
Local media outlets in Haiti have reported that the officer may have been killed, with videos circulating on social media purportedly showing a lifeless individual in a Kenyan uniform. However, these reports have not been officially confirmed. Specialized search teams have been deployed to locate the missing officer.
This incident underscores the escalating challenges faced by the MSS mission in Haiti. Gangs currently control approximately 85% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, leading to widespread violence and instability. The mission, led by Kenyan forces, has been striving to combat these gangs and restore order. Despite these efforts, the security situation remains dire, with more than 5,600 people reported killed in Haiti last year due to gang-related violence.
The Kenyan-led force was launched last year with a commitment to deploy 1,000 officers to Haiti; as of now, 800 have been deployed. In February, another Kenyan officer was killed by gangs, prompting calls from opposition leaders in Kenya for better equipment and support for the mission’s officers.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, recognizing the need for enhanced support and resources to address the complex security challenges in Haiti.
