Tribute to a Distinguished Officer: Remembering Solomon Ehigiator Arase

By Dr. Michael O. Omoruyi | Publisher, iNewsAfrica
The news of the passing of former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Ehigiator Arase, on August 31, 2025, struck me with a deep sense of loss. Nigeria has not only lost a former police chief but also a man of intellect, character, and uncommon service to his nation.

A Life of Service and Discipline
Arase embodied the ideal of a public servant—calm under pressure, disciplined in duty, and guided by an unwavering sense of justice. As the 18th Inspector-General of Police, he steered the Force during a turbulent period in our nation’s history, demonstrating leadership rooted in intelligence, reform, and integrity. Unlike many who wore the uniform, he understood that policing was not merely about power, but about responsibility, compassion, and foresight.
His work in the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau (CIIB) showed his brilliance in intelligence-led policing. His tenure as Commissioner of Police (CP) in Akwa Ibom and later as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) proved that he was a leader who led by knowledge, not intimidation.
The Scholar in Uniform
What set Arase apart was his rare combination of scholarship and service. With a background in Political Science, Law, and advanced legal studies, he brought an intellectual depth that few police officers of his generation possessed. He was proof that education is not a detour from leadership, but the very foundation of it.
Legacy Beyond the Badge
After his retirement, Arase continued to serve Nigeria as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), championing reforms and the professionalization of the Force. Even when controversies swirled around policing in Nigeria, he carried himself with dignity, refusing to be dragged into petty politics.
He leaves behind a legacy of discipline, professionalism, and vision—reminding us that true leadership is measured not by the length of tenure but by the depth of impact.
A Nation in Mourning
Today, as we mourn him, we must also celebrate him. Solomon Arase represented the best of what the Nigeria Police Force could be—intelligent, disciplined, and committed to service above self. His death should not only draw tears but inspire reflection: how do we build on the example he set? How do we honor him by continuing the reforms he championed?
Farewell to a Patriot
As an academic, a technologist, and a Nigerian deeply invested in the future of our nation, I salute the life of Solomon Arase. He was more than a police officer; he was a patriot, a reformer, and a gentleman. His passing leaves a void, but his legacy will continue to remind us that service, when done with honor, outlives us all.
Farewell, IGP Solomon Ehigiator Arase. Nigeria salutes you.
