Recent reports have emerged regarding alleged attacks on properties associated with former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, amid political tensions in the state. However, these reports have been officially refuted by local authorities.

On March 16, 2025, some media outlets claimed that protesters had set fire to Wike’s residence and vehicles, expressing outrage over recent political developments in Rivers State. These reports also suggested that the youths chanted slogans against Wike, accusing him of betrayal and political interference.

However, an investigation by iNewsAfrica revealed that these reports were unfounded. The Rivers State Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the reports are “fake news” and “not true.”

The political climate in Rivers State has been tense due to a standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly. The Assembly recently adjourned plenary sessions indefinitely amid threats of impeachment against Governor Fubara. This development has raised concerns among various stakeholders, including the Ijaw National Congress (INC), which has rejected any move to impeach Fubara, emphasizing his significance as the first Ijaw individual to serve as the state’s governor.

Former Governor Wike has publicly addressed the situation, stating that if Governor Fubara has breached constitutional tenets and the House of Assembly deems it an impeachable offense, then due process should be followed. He dismissed threats of potential unrest following an impeachment, asserting that such actions are constitutionally provided for and should not be seen as a cause for alarm.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to ensure the stability and progress of Rivers State.
