Abuja, Nigeria – In a bold move to strengthen its domestic economy, Nigeria has announced a six-month ban on the export of raw shea nuts, a key ingredient used in global beauty creams and skincare products.

The government says the suspension, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at shifting the country from being merely a supplier of raw materials to becoming a leading exporter of refined shea butter and value-added products.

Economic Ambitions

Officials project that in the short term, the ban could generate an additional US $300 million in revenue, with long-term gains estimated at US $3 billion by 2027 if the policy holds. Nigeria currently produces nearly 40% of the world’s raw shea nuts, yet captures only 1% of the US $6.5 billion global shea market.

“The era of exporting our wealth in raw form is coming to an end. Nigeria must benefit fully from the treasures of its soil,” said a senior trade official at the policy launch.

Supporting Local Growth

The ban is expected to create jobs, expand rural income, and empower women—who play a central role in shea nut collection and processing. Recently, a state-of-the-art shea processing plant was commissioned in Niger State, signaling government readiness to back the sector with infrastructure.

Policy Tensions & Global Impact

While seen as a step toward industrialization, the ban has also raised questions. Critics warn that restrictions alone may not deliver results unless backed by robust investment in processing capacity, logistics, and export infrastructure.

International beauty brands dependent on Nigerian shea may need to adjust sourcing strategies, possibly increasing demand for refined Nigerian products or turning to competitors in Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Looking Ahead

The six-month policy will be reviewed at the end of its term, with analysts watching closely to see whether Nigeria can turn the temporary ban into a sustainable strategy that propels the nation into the heart of the global cosmetic supply chain.
