Lagos, Nigeria – The influential Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has sharply criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring that his administration has “failed Nigerians woefully” just two years into his tenure.
In a strongly worded statement issued after its national meeting, Afenifere lamented what it described as Tinubu’s “betrayal of democratic ideals” and a “gross disconnect” from the people who voted him into office. The group condemned the administration’s economic and security policies, stating they have led to deeper poverty, mass unemployment, and escalating insecurity across the nation.
“We had hoped a Yoruba son would rise to the occasion and bring succor to a battered country. Unfortunately, President Tinubu has dashed the hopes of millions,” said the group’s spokesperson, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.
The organization cited the worsening cost of living, poor electricity supply, and continued corruption as signs that the current government has failed to implement meaningful reforms. Afenifere further warned that unless urgent corrective measures are taken, the nation risks sliding into deeper chaos.
“What we are witnessing is not governance but a recycled pattern of elite indifference,” the statement added.
Afenifere also took issue with the perceived marginalization of the South-West and failure to address pressing regional concerns such as restructuring and state police. The group urged Tinubu to reflect on the promises he made during his campaign and act decisively to restore public trust.
As discontent brews across Nigeria, political analysts believe Afenifere’s remarks could signal a growing disenchantment even within Tinubu’s base in the South-West.
