Uyo, Nigeria – In a groundbreaking leap for African medical technology, a Nigerian firm has developed the country’s first hyper-real bionic arms, offering amputees both functionality and a natural appearance designed to match African skin tones.

The innovation comes from Immortal Cosmetic Art, a prosthetics company based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The firm introduced the Ubokobong Bionic Arm, named after CEO John Amanam Sunday’s younger brother, who lost his fingers in a fireworks accident. The tragedy inspired the founder to pursue a solution that blends empathy with advanced technology.

Unlike traditional prosthetics that are often imported, expensive, and rarely designed with African users in mind, the Ubokobong Bionic Arm combines hyper-realistic aesthetics with advanced electromyography (EMG) technology. The device interprets electrical signals from the brain, allowing amputees to control the arm’s movements seamlessly.

“This is more than innovation—it’s dignity restored,” said Sunday, emphasizing the company’s mission to make the device affordable and accessible for everyday Nigerians through partnerships with government agencies and NGOs.

Already, the invention is attracting global attention. Pre-orders have been placed from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Ghana, positioning Nigeria as a rising hub for medtech innovation.

For amputees like Gift Usen, a 25-year-old cosmetologist born with only one fully formed hand, the bionic arm represents more than just technology—it’s hope. “When I finally wear this arm, I will be complete. It will change my life,” she said.

Experts believe the Ubokobong Bionic Arm could transform prosthetic care across Africa, bridging the gap between innovation and inclusivity, and placing Nigeria at the forefront of solutions designed by Africans for Africans.
