Gunmen kill at least 52 people in Nigeria’s Plateau state

At least 52 people killed and nearly 2,000 displaced following a series of attacks by gunmen on six villages in Bokkos district, Plateau State, Nigeria. The assaults, which occurred over several days, also left 22 individuals injured and hospitalized.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the assailants carried out brutal assaults, resulting in numerous fatalities and extensive property damage. Three displacement camps have been established to accommodate the displaced individuals.
President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators, emphasizing that they will face severe punishment.
Plateau State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has a history of inter-communal conflicts, often between herders and farmers. While these clashes are frequently framed as ethno-religious disputes, factors such as competition over land and the effects of climate change, including shrinking grazing areas, have also contributed to the unrest.
This recent violence underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region and highlights the need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of such conflicts.
