Powerful. Assertive. Designed for leaders.
Bayelsa: Fifteen former domestic workers of Nigeria’s ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan, have been detained at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Bayelsa State since 2019. They are accused of stealing jewelry and household items valued at approximately N200 million, including gold bangles, Samsung air conditioners, and flat-screen televisions.
The detainees face 18 charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit felony, and burglary. Despite over 40 court adjournments, their trial has seen minimal progress, leading to concerns about prolonged pre-trial detention and potential violations of their rights.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has refuted claims of illegal detention or undue influence by Mrs. Jonathan, asserting that the detainees are held legally under valid court warrants and have been treated humanely.
Legal advocacy groups, such as Tech4Justice, have expressed frustration over the judicial delays and alleged interference, emphasizing the need for a fair and expedited trial.
This case highlights systemic challenges within Nigeria’s judicial system, particularly concerning prolonged pre-trial detentions and the necessity for timely legal proceedings to uphold justice and human rights.
