Ghana: Dangote Launches $162 Million Sugar Refinery to Slash Imports and Boost Local Jobs

By iNewsAfrica Business Desk | May 12, 2025
Accra, Ghana – In a move set to transform Ghana’s agro-industrial landscape, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has officially announced the establishment of a $162 million sugar refinery in Kwame-Danso, Bono East Region. The mega project aims to reduce Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported sugar while stimulating local agriculture and job creation.
Designed to process an impressive 12,000 tons of sugarcane daily, the refinery will be powered by a 25,000-hectare irrigated sugarcane plantation—positioning Ghana to cut down its annual sugar import bill, which currently stands at $162 million.

Beyond sugar production, the facility will generate molasses and ethanol, supporting Ghana’s agro-processing and renewable energy sectors. This aligns with the government’s flagship “One District, One Factory” initiative aimed at decentralizing industrial growth and creating jobs in rural communities.
“This investment is a testament to Dangote’s confidence in Ghana’s economy and the broader vision of African industrialization,” said Kwaku Asare, Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry. “It marks a major step toward self-sufficiency and economic resilience.”
The project is also expected to strengthen regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), positioning Ghana as a key player in West Africa’s sugar market.
Aliko Dangote, speaking at the launch, stated, “We are not just building a factory; we are building an ecosystem that supports farmers, creates jobs, and promotes industrial self-reliance across Africa.”
iNewsAfrica will continue to monitor the impact of this landmark investment on Ghana’s economy and the region’s industrial future.
