India Launches Missile Strikes on Pakistan Following Kashmir Terror Attack

— by iNewsAfrica International Desk
NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD — Two weeks after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, India has launched a wave of precision missile strikes on targets within Pakistani territory, dramatically escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
The retaliatory operation, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” struck nine suspected terror sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir early Monday, May 6, 2025. According to Indian defense officials, the strikes targeted “terrorist infrastructure” linked to groups planning cross-border attacks, including suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba-affiliated elements.
The Pahalgam bombing, which killed 26 civilians and injured over 20, was initially claimed by The Resistance Front before the group retracted its statement. Indian intelligence sources maintain the attack was planned with backing from across the border.
Pakistan has condemned India’s military action as an “unprovoked act of war,” claiming at least eight civilians, including a child, were killed, and 38 others injured. A mosque in Bahawalpur was reportedly among the locations hit. Pakistan’s air force was immediately placed on high alert, and retaliatory artillery fire was reported across the Line of Control (LoC).
In a televised address, Pakistan’s Prime Minister denounced the strikes and vowed “a swift and strong response.” Meanwhile, India’s defense ministry reiterated the strikes were “measured, focused, and non-escalatory,” claiming no Pakistani military installations were targeted.
Global Reactions and Rising Fears
The United Nations and major global powers expressed deep concern. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged both nations to “exercise maximum restraint,” warning of the grave risks posed by further escalation. U.S. President Donald Trump called the developments “deeply troubling” and encouraged urgent diplomatic engagement.
With fresh artillery exchanges continuing along the LoC, fears are mounting that the crisis could spiral into broader conflict.
Background: A Region on Edge
India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars over Kashmir since their independence in 1947, and tensions frequently flare along the heavily militarized border. The latest incident is the most serious since the Balakot air strikes of 2019, following the Pulwama terror attack.
As international actors call for calm, both New Delhi and Islamabad remain defiant — signaling that peace may be elusive without firm diplomatic intervention.
