Cairo: Egypt and the European Union have recently held high-level talks in Cairo, focusing on several pressing regional issues and the broader scope of bilateral relations. The discussions primarily revolved around the following key areas:
Gaza Crisis
Both parties expressed concern over the ongoing humanitarian and security situation in Gaza. Egypt emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid, reaffirming its central role in mediating between Israel and Palestinian factions. The EU reiterated support for efforts aimed at de-escalation, while advocating for a two-state solution as a long-term resolution.
Syria Conflict
The talks also addressed the continued instability in Syria, with a shared focus on promoting a political solution under UN auspices. There were discussions on how to deal with refugee returns, counter-terrorism, and the broader implications of the conflict on regional stability.
Bilateral and Economic Cooperation
On a broader note, Egypt and the EU reviewed their economic and strategic partnership, particularly under the EU’s Global Gateway initiative. Topics included:
-
Investment in infrastructure and energy (especially renewable energy and green hydrogen)
-
Trade expansion
-
Migration cooperation, balancing border control with development support
Geopolitical Coordination
Both sides are aiming to strengthen coordination on regional security, energy corridors, and addressing the root causes of migration and conflict. Egypt is seen as a pivotal partner in maintaining Mediterranean and Middle Eastern stability.
