Calabar: In a deeply troubling development, a police inspector identified as Effiong Bassey reportedly went on a violent rampage, fatally shooting one person, injuring two others, and subsequently holding fellow officers hostage. The motives behind the inspector’s actions remain unclear, and investigations are currently underway.
Authorities have since taken control of the situation, and the Nigeria Police Force has promised a thorough inquiry into the incident. Early reports suggest that mental health concerns or internal grievances may have contributed to the officer’s behavior, although no official statement has confirmed this.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in law enforcement, including stress management, internal oversight, and access to mental health support for officers. It underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms within the Nigerian Police Force to prevent such tragedies and restore public trust.
