BREAKING: President Tinubu to Announce Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, as Next INEC Chairman

Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN)
NEWS FLASH – iNewsAfrica | October 7, 2025 | Abuja
Credible sources reaching iNewsAfrica have confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to announce the appointment of Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to reliable reports obtained by iNewsAfrica from top government insiders and corroborated by findings from Sahara Reporters and ThisDayLive, the announcement is expected imminently, following internal consultations within the presidency and a pending meeting of the National Council of State.
Prof. Amupitan, a respected law scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, is currently a professor at the University of Jos and has served in various academic and administrative capacities, including as Dean of the Faculty of Law. Sources disclosed that he has also been a long-time legal counsel to Senator Dino Melaye, having represented him in multiple legal matters over the past decade.
If confirmed, Prof. Amupitan will succeed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC Chairman is nearing completion. Analysts view the move as a strategic step ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle, with gubernatorial and general elections scheduled for the coming years.
Political observers, however, are closely watching the development, noting that Amupitan’s long-standing professional relationship with Melaye—a well-known opposition figure—could raise questions about neutrality in a politically charged environment.
Nonetheless, constitutional procedures require that the appointment be formally approved by the Senate after recommendation by the President and endorsement by the Council of State.
This developing story continues to generate strong reactions among political stakeholders, electoral reform advocates, and civil society groups, as Nigeria anticipates a potential transition in the leadership of its top electoral body.
