In a significant move to address housing deficits and promote equitable asset redistribution, the Federal Government has unveiled plans to sell 753 duplexes in Abuja, previously forfeited by former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, to low and middle-income Nigerians. This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on leveraging recovered assets for public welfare.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered the estate, spanning over 150,000 square meters in Abuja’s Lokogoma District, in December 2024. Described as the largest single asset recovery since the EFCC’s inception in 2003, the estate was officially handed over to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development following a directive from President Tinubu.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, announced that the government would conduct integrity tests on the structures to ensure safety and compliance with building standards. Upon successful evaluation, the duplexes will be completed and made available for purchase through the Renewed Hope Portal, which is already operational.

To facilitate accessibility, the government plans to offer flexible payment options, including mortgage arrangements, installment plans, and rent-to-own schemes. This approach aims to accommodate a broader spectrum of Nigerians, particularly those in the low and middle-income brackets.

However, some real estate experts have expressed concerns regarding the affordability of the four-bedroom duplexes for low-income earners. Suggestions have been made to remodel the properties into smaller, more affordable units or to sell them at market value to fund social housing projects.

The Ministry has assured the public of a transparent sales process, emphasizing that official announcements will be made through appropriate channels. Nigerians are advised to await these communications before taking any action.

This development marks a proactive step by the Federal Government to repurpose assets recovered from corruption, transforming them into resources that directly benefit the populace.
