Abuja, Nigeria – iNewsAfrica | Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has publicly explained his decision to align with a broad coalition of opposition figures, emphasizing that Nigeria’s survival and future prosperity now demand a unified front beyond party lines.
Speaking during a recent media interaction, Obi declared:
“I joined the coalition not because of personal ambition, but because Nigeria is at a crossroads. The old order has failed us, and it’s time for a new political culture rooted in accountability, equity, and service to the people.”
He noted that the coalition is built on shared values, not just political strategy.
“We are not coming together to share power. We are uniting to build a better Nigeria — one where leadership is about competence and compassion, not ethnicity, religion, or corruption.”
The coalition, which includes several pro-democracy advocates, civil society leaders, and emerging political voices, is reportedly exploring a “Third Force” agenda to challenge the dominance of the ruling APC and the traditional opposition PDP.
Obi, who has continued to enjoy strong youth support, especially through the “Obidient” movement, stressed that rebuilding Nigeria requires collective sacrifice:
“This coalition is about the future — our children’s future. We must break away from the politics of bitterness and division.”
He reaffirmed his belief in issue-based politics, urging fellow leaders to prioritize national interest above political gamesmanship.
The move has been praised by some political analysts as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, though skeptics question whether ideological differences within the coalition can be managed effectively.
Still, Obi remains optimistic.
“We can argue, we can disagree, but we must stay focused on the big picture – rescuing Nigeria.”
