New York City: A tragic helicopter crash occurred in the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey, resulting in the deaths of all six individuals on board. The victims included a Spanish family—two adults and three children—along with the pilot.
Incident Overview
The Bell 206 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter and registered to Meridian Helicopters, departed from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at approximately 2:59 p.m. The aircraft embarked on a sightseeing tour, flying over landmarks such as Governor’s Island and the Statue of Liberty. At around 3:17 p.m., the helicopter crashed into the Hudson River near the Holland Tunnel ventilation shaft in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Eyewitness Accounts and Initial Findings
Witnesses reported hearing loud noises resembling gunshots and observed parts of the helicopter detaching mid-air before the aircraft inverted and plunged into the river . Emergency responders from the NYPD, FDNY, and other agencies arrived promptly. Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported to local hospitals, where they were later declared deceased.
Ongoing Investigation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated investigations to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest a catastrophic mechanical failure, with the main rotor and tail boom separating from the helicopter mid-flight.
Community Response
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed deep condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to the family of those who were on board and all six who were on board of the helicopter.” The Spanish Consulate in New York is coordinating with local authorities to support the victims’ families.
