Nigeria: LPPMC Commends Supreme Court, INEC for Defending Democracy Amid Labour Party Leadership Crisis

LPPMC National Coordinator, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye

The Liberal Progressive and Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC) has commended the Supreme Court of Nigeria for its landmark ruling that reaffirms the rule of law and strengthens Nigeria’s democratic foundations amid the Labour Party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
In an official statement made available to iNewsAfrica, the LPPMC, through its National Coordinator, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, described the ruling that nullified the illegitimate conventions organized by the defunct Julius Abure-led faction as “a triumph for democracy and a resounding rejection of political impunity.”
The coalition expressed full support for the Sen. Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission, and the former members of the National Transition Committee, commending their steadfast commitment to restoring integrity, transparency, and accountability within the Labour Party.
“These patriots have shown resilience in rescuing the Labour Party from the grip of opportunists seeking to hijack it for personal interests,” Dr. Okundaye told iNewsAfrica.
The LPPMC also welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s clarification on May 8, 2025, refuting claims of recognizing unauthorised individuals as party leaders. INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, reaffirmed that the Commission had not made any official recognitions and pledged to review the Supreme Court ruling before making its position known.
Dr. Okundaye urged INEC to maintain its principled stance, emphasizing that democracy thrives when institutions courageously uphold the constitution and reject political manipulation.
Calling for swift action, the LPPMC demanded that INEC formally recognise the Sen. Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee in line with the Supreme Court’s decision. It described the expired Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC), whose tenure ended in June 2024, as a “dead lion growling in desperation” after recent attempts to suspend elected officials like Governor Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha.
The LPPMC rejected efforts to impose a one-party state or disrupt progressive coalitions building toward the 2027 elections, calling on Nigerians, civil society, and international observers to support transparency and accountability efforts within the Labour Party.
“Democracy is not a spectator sport,” Dr. Okundaye emphasized. “It demands vigilance, courage, and collective action. We must build on this victory to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy from predatory elites.”
