The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that one of its Alpha Jets crashed in Niger State on Friday, 6 December 2025, after developing a serious in-flight emergency. The aircraft, which had just taken off from NAF Base Kainji during a routine post-inspection functional check flight, encountered a critical malfunction moments after becoming airborne.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the two pilots onboard responded swiftly and professionally, demonstrating what the NAF described as “exceptional courage and composure.” Upon detecting the emergency, the pilots steered the aircraft away from populated areas to prevent civilian casualties before successfully ejecting.

NAF authorities say both pilots landed safely and are currently in stable condition. They are undergoing standard post-ejection medical evaluation as part of Air Force safety protocols.

Air Commodore Ejodame praised the crew for their discipline and quick thinking, noting that their actions averted what could have been a major tragedy. He added that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the emergency and to strengthen flight safety across NAF operations.

The NAF also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of operational readiness and aircraft safety, especially at a time when tactical air assets remain crucial to Nigeria’s internal security efforts.
