Benin Says It Has Foiled Coup Attempt by Elements Within Its Armed Forces

By iNewsAfrica Staff Reporter | December 07, 2025
Cotonou, Benin β The government of Benin announced that it has successfully thwarted a coup attempt allegedly orchestrated by members of the West African nation’s armed forces, marking yet another sign of political turbulence in a region increasingly unsettled by military takeovers.
In a televised address, Interior Minister Alassane Seidou confirmed the incident, assuring citizens that the attempt was contained before it could escalate.
βThe Beninese armed forces and their leadership, true to their oath, remained committed to the republic,β Seidou said, emphasizing that the loyalty of the military hierarchy played a decisive role in foiling the plot.
Authorities have not yet released details about the officers involved, the scale of the attempted overthrow, or the motivations behind it. However, officials say investigations are underway and that additional measures have been taken to reinforce national security.
Benin, long regarded as one of West Africaβs more stable democracies, now finds itself confronting a challenge that has plagued several of its neighbors. The region has witnessed a surge of coups and attempted coups in recent yearsβfrom Mali and Burkina Faso to Niger and Guineaβraising concerns about democratic backsliding and rising security threats.
The Beninese government reiterated its commitment to constitutional order and reassured citizens that there is no imminent danger.
As more information emerges, the international community is expected to closely watch developments in Benin, given the growing pattern of political instability across West Africa.
