In a high-stakes Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash, Nigeria’s Super Falcons edged out defending champions South Africa 2–1 on Tuesday night, reigniting their quest for a record-extending 10th continental title.

Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria the lead just before halftime with a coolly converted penalty after a VAR review confirmed a handball by South African defender Bambanani Mbane. The Bayana Bayana responded in the 60th minute when Linda Motlhalo slotted in her own penalty, awarded after Hildah Magaia was brought down by Osinachi Ohale.

But in the dying moments of added time, Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie delivered a moment of brilliance—and heartbreak for the South Africans. Her deep free-kick evaded everyone in the box, slipping past the goalkeeper and into the net to send the Super Falcons into Saturday’s final.

The emotionally charged match was not without casualties, as South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado was stretchered off following a serious injury. Despite the setback, South Africa fought valiantly but were unable to hold off Nigeria’s last-minute surge.

With this result, Nigeria advances to face tournament hosts Morocco, who beat Ghana on penalties in the other semi-final. The final will take place in Rabat on July 26, promising a thrilling showdown between Africa’s most decorated women’s team and the rising North African challengers.

Meanwhile, South Africa will battle Ghana for third place on Friday.

The Super Falcons’ victory not only avenges their WAFCON 2022 final loss to South Africa but keeps their “Mission X” dream—winning a 10th title—very much alive.
