New York City — A deadly shooting rocked Midtown Manhattan Monday evening when a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle opened fire inside a high-rise office tower at 345 Park Avenue, killing five people — including an off-duty NYPD officer — and injuring at least two others before taking his own life.

Authorities identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane D. Tamura, a Nevada man. He stormed the building just after 6:30 p.m., opening fire in the lobby and later on the 33rd floor, where he was eventually found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the officer, who was working a private security detail, died heroically confronting the attacker. “He acted with selfless bravery, putting himself between the shooter and civilians,” she said.

The tower houses major firms, including Blackstone and the NFL headquarters, though no official motive has been established. Police are now combing through the shooter’s digital footprint and travel history to determine if he had any connection to the building’s tenants.

Mayor Eric Adams called the tragedy “a chilling reminder of the ever-present threat of gun violence—even in the heart of America’s safest city.”

The FBI, NYPD bomb squad, and emergency services quickly secured the scene, and hundreds of employees were evacuated from the skyscraper as officers conducted floor-by-floor sweeps.

As the investigation unfolds, New Yorkers are left shaken by the rare mass shooting in one of the city’s busiest business districts. Mental health support and crisis counselors have been deployed for affected workers and families of the victims.
