ABUJA — Tension gripped Nigeria’s capital on Monday when a loud explosion erupted at a bus stop opposite the Mogadishu Cantonment, commonly known as Abacha Barracks. According to eyewitness reports and military sources, the blast occurred shortly before 3 PM and caused widespread panic among nearby civilians and commuters.
Preliminary findings indicate that a man carrying a concealed improvised explosive device (IED) in a rubber can was approaching the military checkpoint when personnel noticed suspicious behavior. The individual was reportedly directed away from the checkpoint for questioning. Moments later, the device detonated, killing the suspect on the spot and injuring another bystander.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command, in collaboration with military authorities, immediately cordoned off the area. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was deployed to secure the scene and initiate forensic investigations.
While security operatives suspect an attempted suicide bombing, no group has claimed responsibility, and the exact motive remains under investigation. The Nigerian Army released a statement urging the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control.
This incident, the latest in a string of security alerts across Nigeria, raises serious concerns about the persistent threat of terrorism and the need for heightened vigilance across key infrastructure in the capital.
