Burkina Faso Orders Corporate Relocation in Drive for Economic Independence

President Ibrahim Traoré
By Dr. Michael Omoruyi | iNewsAfrica
In a decisive push toward economic self-reliance, the government of Burkina Faso has issued a bold directive requiring all companies earning more than CFA 5 billion (approximately $8.8 million) annually to relocate their headquarters within the country.
The move, officials say, is part of a broader strategy to retain national wealth, create sustainable local jobs, and strengthen fiscal sovereignty. By anchoring major corporate operations domestically, the government hopes to curb capital flight and ensure that local communities benefit more directly from corporate profits.
Under the new framework, companies that comply will be rewarded with tax incentives and expedited operating permits, while those that resist could face stringent penalties.
President Ibrahim Traoré, announcing the directive in a national address, underscored the nation’s resolve to reclaim control over its economy:
“No more exploiting our resources while keeping your headquarters abroad,” Traoré stated. “Burkina Faso’s wealth must serve the Burkinabé people first.”
This policy aligns with a growing continental shift toward economic nationalism, as African nations seek to redefine their participation in global trade and assert greater control over their natural and industrial assets. Observers say Burkina Faso’s bold stance could inspire similar reforms across the region—marking a turning point for African-led economic transformation.
