Accra, Ghana – August 8, 2025 – Ghana has been plunged into national mourning following the tragic crash of a Ghana Air Force Z-9EH helicopter that claimed the lives of eight people, including two senior government ministers.

The helicopter, which was en route from Accra to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for an anti-illegal mining engagement, went down in the Adansi Akrofuom area on Wednesday. There were no survivors.

Among the deceased were Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, and other prominent figures, alongside three Air Force crew members.

President John Mahama has described the incident as a “national tragedy,” declaring a three-day period of national mourning and ordering flags to fly at half-mast across the country. Parliament has also paid tribute, with lawmakers observing a moment of silence in honour of the victims.

In the wake of the loss, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has been appointed acting Defence Minister to ensure continuity in the nation’s security leadership.

Investigators from the Ghana Armed Forces and National Fire Service have launched a probe into the cause of the crash, which remains unknown. Officials say they are exploring the possibility of mechanical failure, adverse weather, or other contributing factors.

As Ghana grieves, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum and international community, reflecting the deep shock and sorrow gripping the nation.
