US jet fuel imports surge with Nigeria’s Dangote refinery supply

|Published 2:50 PM ET, Tuesday March 25, 2025|
In March 2025, the United States imported approximately 2 million barrels of jet fuel from Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery, marking a significant development in global energy trade. Specifically, six vessels carrying about 1.7 million barrels arrived at U.S. ports, with an additional shipment of approximately 348,000 barrels expected by March 29.
The Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, commenced operations in January 2024 and quickly ramped up production to meet international demand. This surge in jet fuel imports has propelled U.S. total imports to around 226,000 barrels per day in March, the highest since February 2023.
This influx is anticipated to exert downward pressure on U.S. aviation fuel prices ahead of the peak summer travel season. The increased supply has also led to heightened demand for storage facilities in key locations such as Houston and New York Harbor.
The Dangote Refinery’s successful penetration into the U.S. market underscores its potential to reshape global fuel trading dynamics, positioning it as a new swing supplier in the Atlantic Basin. This development not only enhances Nigeria’s standing in the global energy sector but also contributes to a more diversified and competitive international fuel market
