The United Kingdom government has recently updated its list of unclaimed estates, revealing that over 170 properties belonging to deceased African migrants remain unclaimed, with Nigerians constituting a significant portion. This list is maintained by the Bona Vacantia Division (BVD) of the Government Legal Department, which handles estates of individuals who pass away intestate (without a will) and without known heirs.

Some notable names on the list include:

  • Julius Taiwo Akinyeye: Died in 1995 from Ondo State.

  • Julius Ajidahuan: A bachelor who died in 2009.

  • Adenike Adebiyi: Died in 2004.

  • Akanni Jeremiah Adejumo: Died in 2017.

  • Solomon Adekanmibi: A bachelor who died in 2021.

  • Richard Adesanya: Died in 2011.

  • Ganiyu Akambi Aderinto: Died in 2016.

  • Jeff Adhekeh: Died in 2021.

  • Isaac Ademola Adio: A bachelor who died in 2012.

The BVD updates this list regularly, and estates remain unclaimed for up to 30 years from the date of death before they are removed if no rightful heir comes forward.

To make a claim, potential heirs must provide a detailed family tree demonstrating their relationship to the deceased, along with relevant birth, marriage, and death certificates. Identification documents linking the claimant’s name and address are also required.

For comprehensive guidance on the claims process, including the order of priority for entitlement and necessary documentation, it is advisable to consult the official UK government resources or seek assistance from a solicitor experienced in probate matters.

This situation underscores the importance of drafting a valid will and informing family members about one’s assets to ensure that estates are rightfully claimed and distributed.
