The U.S. military, under President Donald Trump’s directive, conducted coordinated airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) operatives in Somalia’s Golis Mountains. These precision strikes targeted a senior ISIS attack planner and other terrorists, resulting in multiple militant fatalities without civilian casualties. The operation was executed in collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia.
President Trump emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to eliminating threats to its citizens and allies, stating, “The message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that ‘WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!'”
ISIS-Somalia, established in 2015 by defectors from al-Shabaab, has been involved in sporadic attacks, primarily in the Puntland region. Despite facing pressure from Somali forces, U.S. airstrikes, and rival groups, ISIS continues to operate and recruit in the area.
