Trump says bullet pierced his ear; attack being investigated as assassination attempt, law enforcement tells multiple media outlets

Former President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt Saturday at a Pennsylvania rally and said afterward that he was shot in the ear. Series of gunfire set off panic among thousands of attendees and a dramatic scene in which a bloodied Trump was surrounded by Secret Service and then escorted to his SUV as he pumped his first in a show of defiance.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place,” he wrote on his social media site.
Few details are known about the the shooter, who was “neutralized” by the Secret Service, the agency said. One member of the attendees was killed and two others critically injured.
Trump, who was rushed to the hospital, says he is “fine.” Video during the incident showed blood flowing from around his right ear.
Meanwhile, reactions from government leaders poured in shortly after the shooting with Democrats and Republicans alike denouncing the violence.
“There is no place in America for this kind of violence,” President Biden said in remarks from the Rehoboth Beach, Del., police department. “It’s sick. … It cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”
