Rwanda-backed rebels enter major eastern DR Congo city

Dr Congo: On February 16, 2025, the Rwandan-backed March 23 Movement (M23) rebels advanced into Bukavu, a strategic city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), encountering minimal resistance from government forces. This incursion follows their capture of Goma in late January, further undermining Kinshasa’s authority in the region. The Congolese government has accused Rwanda of orchestrating these offensives, alleging direct involvement of Rwandan troops—a claim Rwanda denies, asserting its actions are defensive against Hutu militias operating in the DRC.
The swift progression of M23 has intensified fears of a broader regional conflict, rooted in historical tensions and complex ethnic dynamics. The United Nations reports that the recent hostilities have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, with approximately 350,000 individuals displaced in the eastern provinces. Additionally, M23’s territorial gains have granted them control over valuable mineral deposits, including cobalt and coltan, which are critical to global industries such as electronics and electric vehicles.
In response to the escalating situation, the Congolese government has vowed to restore order, though its forces have faced significant setbacks. Regional leaders and international bodies, including the African Union, have called for immediate dialogue and a ceasefire to prevent further destabilization. However, decisive action against M23 or its alleged supporters remains limited, as diplomatic efforts continue amidst the complex geopolitical landscape.
