Iconic Speech: On independence day, Lumumba delivered a fiery and uncompromising speech that criticized the atrocities of colonialism, which startled both the Belgian monarchy and international observers. His words became a rallying cry for oppressed people globally.
Challenges and Assassination
Lumumba’s tenure as prime minister was marked by immense challenges, including:
Internal Strife: Post-independence Congo faced ethnic tensions and regional secessionist movements, particularly in the resource-rich Katanga region.
Foreign Interference: Belgium and other Western powers, concerned about Lumumba’s alignment with the Soviet Union, intervened to destabilize his government.
Tragic End: Lumumba was arrested, transferred to Katanga under dubious circumstances, and executed on January 17, 1961, in an act orchestrated with foreign complicity. His death is considered one of the most significant political assassinations of the 20th century.
