Open Letter to Nigeria’s Political Leaders: Act Now Before Our Nation Bleeds Beyond Repair

By Dr. Michael Omoruyi | Publisher, iNewsAfrica | May 15, 2025
To the Political Leaders of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
It is with deep pain and unwavering patriotism that I write this open letter. Our nation is bleeding—slowly, violently, and without end. From Zamfara to Benue, from Borno to Enugu, armed bandits, separatist militias, and terrorist cells continue to unleash terror on defenceless Nigerians. The scale of killings, abductions, and displacements has reached tragic proportions. What remains unfathomable is the deafening silence and slow response from those elected to lead.
Nigeria is not at war, yet we endure the daily realities of warfare. Schools are shut. Farmers are fleeing. Entire communities have become ghost towns. The cries of mothers burying their children echo across the land. These are not isolated incidents. This is a national emergency—and yet, the political class seems trapped in cycles of denial, distraction, and delay.
Elected officials, this is not the Nigeria our founding fathers envisioned, nor the country millions risked their lives to vote for. You were chosen not merely to hold office, but to uphold life. And now, more than ever, your duty calls.
As Publisher of iNewsAfrica, and as a son of this great nation, I am compelled to ask:
How many more must die before action is taken?
Let me be clear—condolences are not enough. What Nigeria needs is decisive, courageous, and coordinated leadership. What we demand is action, not apathy.
I propose the following, without delay:
-
Declare a National Security Emergency. Acknowledge the crisis for what it is—a threat to the sovereignty and soul of Nigeria.
-
Reform and Rebuild the Security Sector. Remove political bias in appointments. Put competence, patriotism, and accountability at the forefront.
-
Establish State-Community Security Pacts. Involve traditional rulers, youth leaders, and local vigilantes in formal intelligence-sharing and rapid response.
-
Open Genuine Channels of Dialogue. Address the root causes of separatist agitation and ethnic mistrust through justice, equity, and inclusive governance.
-
Use Technology to Fight Terror. Invest in surveillance, intelligence, and national coordination powered by modern tools—not outdated tactics.
We must break free from the toxic cycle of silence, blame, and lip service. This is a pivotal moment in our history. If we fail to act now, the consequences will echo for generations.
To the President, the Governors, Senators, and all who wield influence—I urge you, in the name of every Nigerian life lost, to lead with urgency and conscience.
History will judge us. Posterity will ask what you did when Nigeria stood on the edge. Let your answer be one of courage, not complicity.
The time to act is not tomorrow. It is now…
Nigeria must not bleed to death.
Respectfully,
Dr. Michael Omoruyi
