Nigeria’s former military ruler admits regret over “June 12” annulled election results

Gen. Ibrahim Babangida governed Nigeria from 1985 to 1993

General Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria’s former military ruler, has for the first time publicly expressed regret over his decision to annul the June 12, 1993, presidential election. In his recent remarks—made during the release of his autobiography and at a fundraiser for the IBB Presidential Library—Babangida acknowledged that the cancelled poll, which was widely believed to have been won by MKO Abiola, was conducted fairly and transparently. He described the annulment as an “accident of history” and admitted that, upon revisiting the detailed results from over 100,000 polling stations, it was clear that Abiola had secured both a majority and the necessary geographical spread of votes.
Babangida’s admission is significant not only because it marks the first time he has acknowledged this error but also because it comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with the legacy of that tumultuous period. Current President Bola Tinubu and other prominent figures have welcomed the gesture as a courageous step towards national reconciliation and healing.
Looking forward, this candid admission may pave the way for a broader reexamination of Nigeria’s journey to democracy. It underscores the importance of accountability in leadership and offers an opportunity for the nation to address longstanding grievances while building a more inclusive and forward-thinking political landscape.
