Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has called for deeper collaboration between the military and the media as part of a strategic approach to combating insecurity across the country.

Speaking at a high-level security communications summit held in Abuja, General Musa emphasized that the fight against terrorism, banditry, and insurgency requires not only military strength but also robust public information management. He urged media stakeholders to support national security objectives through responsible reporting and accurate dissemination of information.

“Our media must understand the sensitivity of security operations. We are not asking for censorship, but we are calling for patriotism and strategic partnership in communicating Nigeria’s security efforts,” the CDS stated. He added that misreporting or unverified narratives can embolden adversaries and demoralize citizens and security personnel alike.

The summit, attended by senior military officers, media executives, civil society representatives, and strategic communication experts, focused on enhancing synergy between defense institutions and information channels. Discussions covered the role of media in conflict reporting, psychological operations, and countering propaganda.

General Musa also revealed plans for the establishment of a joint media-military task force to coordinate strategic messaging and ensure timely, fact-based communication from the armed forces. “Information is a key battlefield in today’s hybrid warfare environment,” he said.

In recent months, Nigeria has faced heightened insecurity in several regions, including continued attacks by insurgent groups in the northeast, kidnapping and banditry in the northwest, and violent separatist activities in the southeast. The Defence Headquarters believes that a united front with the media can help shape public perception, build resilience, and support national cohesion.

Media leaders at the event welcomed the call for collaboration, with many pledging to train their correspondents on conflict-sensitive reporting and to verify facts before publication.

The summit concluded with the launch of a new framework for defense-media engagement, which includes regular briefings, embedded reporting protocols, and the creation of a rapid response team to address misinformation and disinformation in real time.
