Lagos: Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reported that in the past year, it recovered nearly $500 million in proceeds of crime and secured over 4,000 criminal convictions—the highest since the agency’s inception more than two decades ago.

Beyond cash recoveries, the EFCC seized 931,052 metric tons of petroleum products, 975 real estate properties, and company shares. Some of the recovered funds have been reinvested into government projects, aiming to benefit the public and bolster infrastructure.

Despite these efforts, Nigeria remains ranked 140 out of 180 on Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perception Index, indicating ongoing challenges in combating corruption.

The EFCC’s achievements reflect a strengthened commitment to addressing corruption. However, sustained efforts are essential to build on this progress and foster a culture of transparency and accountability in Nigeria.
