Kaduna: On March 5, 2025, Ash Wednesday, the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan in Kaduna State, Nigeria, announced the tragic death of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu. Father Okechukwu, who served as the pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area, was abducted from his residence on the evening of March 4 at approximately 9:15 PM. He was subsequently found murdered in the early hours of March 5.
The diocese expressed profound sorrow over this loss, describing Father Okechukwu as a dedicated servant of God who worked selflessly in spreading messages of peace, love, and hope. He was known for his accessibility and unwavering commitment to his parishioners. The diocese has called for calm among the community, urging against any acts of retaliation, and has invited the faithful to offer prayers and Holy Masses for the repose of his soul.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Christian communities in Nigeria, where clergy and laypersons alike have been subjected to violence and persecution. The international community continues to monitor these developments, advocating for increased security and protection for vulnerable communities in the region.
