The directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a monitoring exercise at the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) center in Abuja. According to Dr. Alausa, the move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the credibility, security, and efficiency of national examinations.

“Starting from November, WAEC and NECO will conduct their objective papers using Computer-Based Testing (CBT). By May/June 2026, both objective and essay components will fully migrate to CBT,” Dr. Alausa stated.

The initiative mirrors the successful adoption of CBT by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which annually conducts digital UTME examinations for over 2.2 million candidates. Authorities believe that extending this model to WAEC and NECO will reduce examination malpractice, streamline logistics, and boost overall educational integrity.

A specialized committee has been established to address potential challenges, including exam leakages, identity verification, and technical preparedness across testing centers nationwide. The committee is expected to issue a comprehensive roadmap for a seamless rollout.

The government emphasized that leveraging technology in examinations aligns with Nigeria’s vision to create a future-ready educational ecosystem and foster global competitiveness among its youth.

Stakeholders in the education sector have been urged to begin preparations immediately to ensure a smooth and successful transition before the 2026 deadline.
