Dundee, Scotland – July 8, 2025 | A tragic wave of shock and mourning has swept across the Scottish city of Dundee and Zimbabwean diaspora communities worldwide following the brutal killing of 39-year-old environmental scientist Dr. Fortune Gomo on a residential street in broad daylight.

The incident occurred on South Road in Dundee around 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, when Dr. Gomo was found seriously injured. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland have since launched a murder investigation, leading to the arrest of 20-year-old Kyler Rattray, who appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday. Rattray made no plea and has been remanded in custody pending further court proceedings within the next eight days.

Dr. Gomo, originally from Zimbabwe, had carved out a notable career in environmental science after earning a PhD from the University of Dundee. She recently joined Scottish Water as a senior scientist, where colleagues described her as “brilliant, driven, and deeply compassionate.”

“This is a devastating loss not only to her family but to the scientific community she inspired,” said a colleague at Scottish Water.
