In a recent address, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, emphasized the necessity for Nigerian communities to actively participate in their own security measures against terrorist threats. He highlighted that while national security agencies are committed to safeguarding the nation, their resources are not sufficient to cover every locality comprehensively.

Mr. Ajayi referenced successful instances where local communities effectively repelled terrorist attacks. He cited the example of Azare in Bauchi State, where residents collectively confronted Boko Haram insurgents, leading to a significant reduction in attacks in that area. Similarly, he mentioned Tafawa Balewa Local Government, where community members utilized their knowledge of the terrain to thwart invaders, thereby enhancing local security.

He advocated for a communal approach to security, urging communities to unite and take a stand against criminal elements. Mr. Ajayi called upon influential figures and elites to engage with their communities, seek appropriate approvals and guidance, and collectively work towards deterring criminal activities.

This perspective underscores the importance of community involvement in national security strategies, highlighting that while security agencies play a crucial role, the active participation of local communities is vital in creating a resilient and secure environment.
