Accra: Ghana’s opposition candidate and former President John Mahama, has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election with a 56.6% margin against Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, marking the biggest margin of victory in 24 years.

John Mahama, who won several regions, including Bono, Ahafo, Western, and Central, won by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2020.

The election comes amid the worst economic crisis in a generation, with unemployment, cost of living, and environmental concerns over illegal gold mining. Mahama’s victory represents a stunning comeback, as no party has won more than two consecutive terms in power since the return of multi-party politics in 1992.

He has promised to transform Ghana into a “24-hour economy” and will be sworn in on 7 January 2025.

Mahama, 65, previously led Ghana from 2012 until 2017, when he was replaced by Akufo-Addo. Mahama also lost the 2020 election, so this victory represents a stunning comeback.
