Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Israel’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Avraham Nigusse, was expelled from an African Union (AU) event in Addis Ababa commemorating the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The ejection occurred at the request of AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf, prompting criticism from Israel, which viewed the action as politically motivated. Nigusse, who stated he was invited by Rwanda, criticized the AU for misrepresenting historical contexts.

An AU diplomat indicated that the ambassador’s removal was due to Israel’s lack of observer status—initially granted in 2021 but suspended in 2023 pending review. This marks the second consecutive year an Israeli diplomat was removed from an AU gathering.

The AU maintains strong ties with the Palestinians, frequently hosting their leaders. Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza have intensified regional tensions; over 50,000 Palestinians have reportedly died since October 2023. Additionally, South Africa has brought a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which Israel dismisses as unfounded.

This incident underscores the complex dynamics between Israel and the African Union, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions and the evolving nature of international alliances.
