Intelligence shows foreign mercenaries involved in planned protest, says IGP Egbetokun
Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), says the police have “credible intelligence” that foreign mercenaries are involved in the planned nationwide protest.
July 26, 2024
In a statement to the press in Abuja, Egbetokun advised Nigerians to exercise caution and carefully evaluate any participation in protest activities.
He indicated that while some groups are calling for violent demonstrations similar to recent events in Kenya, others are advocating for peaceful protests.
IGP Egbetokun noted Nigeria’s history with violent protests and emphasized that there is no need to look abroad to understand the dangers of uncontrolled demonstrations.
He acknowledged those who have withdrawn from the protests due to the troubling motives behind them and the potential for violence.
The Inspector General also recognized those who have opposed any form of protest at this time, fearing manipulation by forces opposed to the nation. Intelligence confirms these concerns, as there is credible evidence of foreign mercenaries being involved.
