Guinea-Bissau Military Takes “Total Control,” Suspends Elections and Closes Borders

Breaking News!!!
Military officers in Guinea-Bissau announced on Wednesday that they had assumed “total control” of the country, suspending all electoral processes and shutting the nation’s borders in a sudden escalation of political tension.
According to the officers, the move is aimed at “restoring order” following what they described as irregularities and instability surrounding the country’s recent political activities. However, the announcement has immediately fueled concerns across West Africa, a region still grappling with a wave of coups and democratic backsliding.
The intervention comes just three days after the country concluded its legislative and presidential elections, a process that citizens hoped would usher in renewed stability for the long-troubled West African state. Instead, the development has left the population anxious and uncertain about what comes next.
Guinea-Bissau, one of the continent’s most politically fragile and economically strained nations, has experienced repeated interruptions of democratic governance—marked by coups, attempted coups, and prolonged institutional dysfunction.
Regional bodies including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union are expected to respond in the coming hours, as shutting borders and halting constitutional processes typically trigger diplomatic pressure and emergency consultations.
As of now, communication from the military leadership remains limited, and civilians across the country are reportedly bracing for further announcements regarding the next steps in governance and security.
