Accra/Kyiv – July 12, 2025 – In a bold geopolitical move, Ghana has pledged to finance the production of Ukrainian drones, marking an unprecedented Africa–Eastern Europe defense partnership. The announcement came after a high-level call between Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Zelenskyy confirmed that “Ghana is ready to finance our production, and we are ready to help our partners secure their borders.” The agreement is part of Ukraine’s broader push to expand its “Army of Drones” initiative and diversify its international support beyond the West.

Strategic Technology, Shared Security

The move comes as Ghana grapples with growing regional threats from Sahel-based insurgents and seeks to modernize its border surveillance infrastructure. Ukraine’s war-tested drone technology presents an ideal solution for tactical and strategic defense.

“This is not just about drones; it’s about a shared future in security and innovation,” said a senior Ghanaian security official, noting the country’s intent to build a more self-reliant defense model rooted in global collaboration.

Beyond Defense: Trade and Diplomacy

The drone financing agreement is part of a broader diplomatic effort between the two nations. Plans are underway for a Ukrainian ministerial delegation to visit Ghana, with discussions to include agricultural technology, grain logistics, and digital infrastructure.

Analysts say the partnership signals a shift in African diplomatic alignments. “Ghana is stepping up as a tech-forward, diplomatically agile nation that sees Ukraine as more than a conflict zone—it sees a partner in transformation,” said political strategist Nana Kofi Asante.

Global Impact

This development may mark a turning point in how African nations engage with wartime economies and high-tech industries. It also represents a rare example of South-South-East collaboration—where an African country contributes directly to the defense manufacturing of an embattled Eastern European nation.

With drones already transforming modern warfare and civil security, Ghana’s investment signals its readiness to lead in a new era of African strategic autonomy.
