LUANDA — Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, ousted in a 2023 military coup, has arrived in Angola alongside his wife Sylvia and son Noureddin Bongo Valentin, marking a dramatic turn in the post-coup saga that shook the Central African nation after over five decades of Bongo family rule.

The Angolan presidency confirmed their arrival on May 16, revealing the relocation was part of a quiet diplomatic arrangement facilitated by President João Lourenço in his capacity as African Union chair. Gabon’s transitional leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, agreed to the move as part of ongoing regional efforts to stabilize the country.

Ali Bongo, 66, had been under house arrest since the August 2023 coup, while Sylvia and Noureddin were held on charges of corruption and money laundering. Human rights groups had raised alarm over their detention conditions, with unconfirmed reports of mistreatment.

While their transfer to Angola is seen as a humanitarian act, Gabonese authorities made clear that legal proceedings against Sylvia and Noureddin will continue, with their release described as “provisional” due to deteriorating health.

This relocation comes as General Nguema consolidates power following a controversial election victory, sparking global interest in Gabon’s fragile journey toward democratic reform.

iNewsAfrica will continue to monitor this developing story as the Bongo dynasty seeks refuge beyond its former empire.
