Dozens of people in the Sudanese state of North Darfur are feared dead following heavy shelling on a camp for displaced people.

The tragic incident occurred in Omdurman, Sudan, where shelling struck the Sabreen Market, resulting in the deaths of at least 56 individuals and injuring 158 others. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were accused of carrying out this attack; however, they have denied responsibility, attributing the shelling to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence affecting civilians in Sudan. For instance, in December 2024, an airstrike hit a market in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, killing over 100 people. Similarly, in May 2023, shelling in the Mayo neighborhood of Khartoum resulted in at least 18 deaths and over 100 injuries.

The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023 between the SAF and the RSF, has led to widespread devastation, including the destruction of infrastructure and a humanitarian crisis. The violence has caused significant civilian casualties and displacement, with reports indicating that both sides have committed serious human rights violations.

The international community continues to call for an end to hostilities and for both parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to achieve a sustainable peace in Sudan.
