Nairobi: A 79-year-old British national, Edgar Charles Frederick, was fatally struck by a vehicle from President William Ruto’s motorcade in Nairobi, Kenya, on March 14, 2025. The incident occurred as the motorcade traveled to a public engagement, and the vehicle involved did not stop after the collision.

Frederick, a retired bank manager from Poole, Dorset, was in Kenya visiting his sister and nephew. He was also recognized for his extensive charity work, including his involvement with the Catholic Organization Cafod.

The driver of the government vehicle was arrested and later released on bail. The British High Commission is liaising with Kenyan authorities regarding the incident.

The accident has sparked public outrage on social media, with many Kenyans criticizing the high speeds at which presidential motorcades travel, especially on busy roads. Kenya’s National Police Service has initiated an investigation and is urging all road users to exercise extreme caution to prevent such accidents.

This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Kenya, where over 3,000 people die annually due to factors such as poor road conditions, unsuitable vehicles, speeding, and reckless driving.
