LONDON, UK — Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former president and one of its most polarizing leaders, has died at the age of 82 following a brief illness. His death was confirmed on Sunday by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu in an official statement, marking the end of a towering political era that spanned over four decades.

The former head of state, who served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023 and previously ruled as military leader from 1983 to 1985, passed away at a London medical clinic where he had been undergoing treatment.

“President Buhari died peacefully in the presence of family and close aides,” Shehu said, without disclosing further medical details.

From Military Ruler to Elected President

Buhari first came to power in December 1983 after a military coup that ousted a democratically elected government. His military regime was known for its rigid discipline, anti-corruption crusade, and controversial human rights record.

Three decades later, in a historic democratic comeback, Buhari won the 2015 general election—becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent president. He was re-elected in 2019, championing the fight against corruption, terrorism, and economic sabotage.

However, his presidency also drew criticism over rising insecurity, economic stagnation, and the handling of national protests like #EndSARS.

A Legacy of Discipline and Division

Known for his austere lifestyle, integrity, and rigid adherence to law and order, Buhari’s legacy remains deeply divisive. Supporters hail him as a symbol of principled leadership who sought to rescue Nigeria from institutional decay. Critics, however, argue that his tenure failed to deliver the transformative change it promised.

In retirement, Buhari had returned to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, where he lived a quiet life, occasionally issuing statements on national matters.

State Mourning and National Reflection

Following the announcement of his death, the Nigerian presidency is expected to declare a period of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and preparations underway for a state burial.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is anticipated to deliver a national address and lead official tributes honoring Buhari’s life of public service.

World leaders and African statesmen have begun to send condolences, marking the passing of a man who shaped the trajectory of Nigeria’s democratic and military history.

“Whether you remember him as a stern general or a determined reformer, Buhari’s place in Nigeria’s national story is undeniable,” said political analyst Ifeanyi Okoye.
